Plantar Fasciitis By Dr. Brett Chavez, D.C.

Plantar Fasciitis and Long Shifts on Your Feet This Season

Retail and service workers on their feet through the holiday rush often develop heel and arch pain. Dr. Brett Chavez explains plantar fasciitis and how chiropractic care can help.

Plantar Fasciitis and Long Shifts on Your Feet This Season

A Predictable Complaint This Time of Year

Between longer retail hours and extra shifts through the holiday rush, Dr. Brett Chavez sees a rise in plantar fasciitis complaints every December at Back 2 Health Chiropractic. It’s not limited to retail workers, either. Anyone spending long stretches standing on hard floors, from warehouse staff to servers working extra holiday shifts, is a candidate for this particular kind of heel and arch pain.

What Plantar Fasciitis Actually Is

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue running along the bottom of the foot, from the heel to the base of the toes. Its job is to support the arch and absorb shock with every step. Standing for extended periods, especially on hard, unforgiving surfaces, places repetitive strain on that tissue. Over time, small amounts of irritation accumulate faster than the tissue can recover, leading to the classic complaint: sharp heel pain first thing in the morning or after sitting for a while, easing somewhat with movement but often building again over a long shift.

Why It’s Not Just a Foot Problem

Dr. Chavez looks beyond the foot itself when evaluating plantar fasciitis, because how someone’s foot strikes the ground is influenced by the mechanics of the ankle, knee, hip, and even the low back. A restriction or imbalance higher up the chain can change gait patterns in ways that put extra strain on the plantar fascia, which is why two patients with the same job can develop very different levels of foot pain depending on their overall biomechanics.

What Treatment Looks Like

Chiropractic adjustments to the foot and ankle can help restore proper joint mechanics that are contributing to abnormal strain on the plantar fascia. When the exam finds restrictions further up the kinetic chain, in the hip or low back, addressing those is part of the plan as well, since improving overall gait mechanics reduces the ongoing strain feeding the foot pain. Soft tissue work, including massage therapy, is often used directly on the calf and foot, since tight calf muscles increase tension on the plantar fascia through their shared connective tissue.

Getting Through Long Shifts

For anyone working long hours on their feet through the season, a few changes make a real difference:

  • Invest in supportive, well-fitted shoes rather than worn-out footwear, since cushioning breaks down well before shoes look visibly worn
  • Stretch the calf and the bottom of the foot before a shift, not just after
  • Roll the arch of the foot over a frozen water bottle for a few minutes at the end of a long day
  • Avoid standing flat and still for long stretches when possible; shifting weight and taking short walking breaks reduces sustained strain
  • Address early morning heel pain rather than pushing through it for weeks, since earlier treatment tends to resolve faster

When to Get It Checked

Mild soreness after an unusually long shift is common. What’s worth having evaluated is heel pain that’s present every morning, pain that’s worsening over several weeks, or pain that’s starting to change how someone walks. Left unaddressed, plantar fasciitis has a tendency to become a longer-standing pattern that’s harder to resolve than it would have been if treated early.

If long shifts this season have your heels and arches aching, schedule a new patient visit at Back 2 Health Chiropractic in Lubbock, TX.
